What Happened on July 3rd – Back to the Future

Thirty years ago today, one of my favorite movies of all time was released.  On July 3, 1985, the blockbuster action-comedy,
Back to the Future made everyone wanted a Delorean DMC-12 and made Michael J. Fox even more of a household name.

Delorean DMC-12, Doc Brown's Time Machine Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly

The film was directed by Robert Zemeckis.  Michael J. Fox starred as Marty McFly, a teenager who travels back 30 years using a time machine built by a zany professor Doc Brown portrayed by Christopher Lloyd.  I guess I’ll be taking us back 30 years too but sorry to say I don’t have a Delorean for the task.  Doc Brown’s Delorean DMC-12 sports car was outfitted with a nuclear reactor and at 88 miles per hour, the plutonium-powered reactor achieves the “1.21 giagawatts” of power it needed to travel through time.

Of course it worked and Marty McFly traveled into the movie history books and arrived in 1955.  As with most time-travel fantasies, it is not good if the people from the future disrupt anything from the past.  In 1955, Marty’s parents were in high school and his time travel put him directly in his mother’s hormonal path.

Marty had to set things straight by getting his parents together and then get back to the future.  A long the way, movie audiences were treated to many funny scenes that the differences in thirty years could only bring.  This included the typical antagonist in a comedy, Biff.

Biff's Ford Super De Luxe covered in manure. One of the most memorable scenes in the film is when Marty McFly escapes Biff by leaping over the car and landing back on the skateboard.

Back to the Future launched a movie franchise that produced a total of three movies.  Although the second one is not very good in my opinion, the movie franchise will go down in history as one of the best.  It is still loved today.  My daughter, a teenager, loves Back to the Future and Back to the Future III.

Here is the cast then and now.

Michael J. Fox Christopher Lloyd Emma Thompson, Thomas F. Wilson and Crispin Glover

The Back to the Future movie franchise is also cemented into pop culture.
