Sunday Photo Fiction Challenge #sundayphotofiction #atozchallenge – Would He Ever Go Home Again

Submitted for Sunday Photo Fiction

spf

Today I am participating in the Sunday Photo Fiction prompt which I’ve been away from for a while and glad to jump back in.  You can find out about this weekly blogging challenge at the link above.  We are provided with the photograph below as a prompt for our stories.

Since I am participating in the A to Z Challenge all during the month of April, I have written a story that stays with my theme for the challenge, A 1970s Time Capsule.  I hope you’ll visit my posts for the challenge too. My story takes place in the early 1970s when the Vietnam War was still ongoing and the United States still had the draft.  Please enjoy Would He Ever Go Home Again

Mike pulled the car into the abandoned lot and cut the engine. It wasn’t always easy to find a place to park the car for the night and get some sleep.  As far as places go, tonight’s accommodations weren’t the best with the highway so close and cars speeding by in a blur.  He couldn’t afford to be choosy.  With little money and his future uncertain he was resigned to his mission.  After the rally when he and the others burned their draft cards he knew he had taken a step from which he couldn’t turn back.  On their way to Canada, all of the others gave up and went home.  Mike moved on alone.  Didn’t that terrible war take his brother from them in 1968? He knew the war had to end soon but he’d be damned if he would go.  Would he ever go home again?  Maybe his mother lost two sons.
